Job Title: Assistant Editor (part-time)
Publication: Broken Pencil, the Magazine of Zine Culture and Independent Arts
Location: Toronto

Broken Pencil, the magazine of zine culture and the independent arts, is a Toronto-based publication devoted to chronicling and critiquing independent culture. We are looking for a part-time assistant editor to work closely with the Editor-in-chief in assigning and editing articles and reviews, writing and updating the Broken Pencil website, as well as representing the magazine at events.

Main duties include:
-communicating with reviewers, selecting/sending out materials for review (zines, books, comics, music, film/video, websites), editing reviews
-assigning and editing front of the book (Pencil Sharpener Section) pieces
-writing periodic columns/features as needed
-attending regular story meetings
-writing for and assisting in the regular updating of BrokenPencil.com
-copyediting and proofreading
-attending events on behalf of Broken Pencil, as well as assisting in the organization of Broken Pencil events.

The successful candidate will be highly organized and a quick learner. Excellent writing and editing skills are necessary as is the proven ability to meet deadlines and be creative under pressure. An ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic proponent of the independent arts in general, and have a demonstrated knowledge of alternative press/publishing in North America.

Note that candidates must live in or be willing to relocate to Toronto, as the assistant editor will work primarily out of the Broken Pencil office in downtown Toronto.
