Artist in Residence:
Attention Drawers & Illustrators!
I want you to apply to When a Stranger Calls a Friend of a Friend. This curated show will act as a visual survey of cross-cultural parallels in contemporary legend and the performance, transmission, form and function of modern urban folklore around the world.
I'm really excited about this one. It reflects my growing interest in folklore and, more specifically, the act of myth-propagation in everyday life. I've always been into storytelling, both as transmitter and receiver. But my love of story-telling really blew up last summer, when I hit the road to promote We Made a Deal with the Devil - a drawing show that explored themes of adventure, risk and collective myth.
Traveling with the show - sailing across Eastern Canada for a month, setting it up the show in parks and cafes and whatnot, talking to people about the stories behind the drawings and hearing new stories from the people I met along the way - really got me thinking about the importance of storytelling in my personal life, how stories-from-the-street - you know, the stories spread from/told to strangers and friends of friends - have shaped my perspective on life and the world around me. It was a great experience. And now, with When a Stranger Calls [...], I've got a unique chance to develop this passion, to delve further into my investigation of modern folklore and how these stories and beliefs shape personal histories around the world.
So here's the deal in a nutshell: Selected artists will draw from their personal histories to create works-on-paper that depict narratives, rumors, jokes, myths and popular beliefs of contemporary legend. The show will be exhibited for two weeks at Project 165’s gallery in Toronto, Canada, and will also be open to tons and tons of visitors during the August edition of Pedestrian Sunday, a popular monthly festival in Toronto’s historic Kensington Market district. I'll make a cute little zine-like catalogue and there will be a fun storytelling event to go with the show. It's gonna be grand - and I hope you'll take a shot at applying!
